Carleton University
A checklist rather than a portrait. It covers what to find out about Carleton University before applying and who to ask, and it deliberately states no figures, no dates and no entry criteria of its own.

What U4S has verified
OrientationThe official website was retrieved and the page confirmed the institution. Everything else on this page is orientation unless marked otherwise below.
- Tuition and fees
- No figure is published on this page.
- Admissions
- U4S publishes no entry requirement, deadline or grade for any institution.
- Scholarships and support
- U4S names no funding scheme and states no eligibility.
Next verification step
Tuition was not published for this institution. Open the institution’s own fee pages and check whether rates are given per programme rather than for the institution as a whole, and which student category each rate applies to. Publish nothing unless the page itself states the amount, the currency, the academic year or intake, the study level, the student category and the period it covers, and unless each amount can be tied to the row it belongs to.
Student life context
What does a week actually look like? That is the question worth answering, and it is answered at programme level rather than at institution level. How teaching is distributed, whether your cohort is together often enough to become familiar, how much of the work is independent, how far people travel in, and how much of the social side runs through clubs and the student association all vary inside a single institution, sometimes sharply.
So ask the student services office, and ask the student association separately, since they see different things. Useful questions: what is running this year, what a student on my programme typically does between classes, what facilities are open to everyone, what they cost to join if anything, and what support exists when a term goes wrong. Company does not assemble itself in an unfamiliar city, and our notes on building a circle from scratch are about that effort rather than about anywhere specific. There is broader background in our section on the general shape of student life.
Housing considerations
Where will you sleep on the night you arrive, and who has agreed to that in writing? Those are the questions to close early. Establish whether the institution has accommodation of its own, whether an offer is needed before you can apply for it, when the window opens and closes, how long an agreement runs, what it includes, what is required at booking, and what happens if your start date moves. The accommodation office holds all of this.
Early matters because the alternatives thin out as teaching approaches, and because somebody arriving from elsewhere cannot easily view a place, meet a landlord, or walk away and try again tomorrow. If you go private, be certain who the contract is with, what it covers and how it ends, and ask the accommodation office what they advise students to check before sending money to anyone advertising a room. General patterns are covered in our guide to finding student housing from another country. Arrangements between flatmates are their own topic, handled in our notes on sharing costs with the people you live with.
International student considerations
Who decides what? That is the most useful way to break this down. Permission to enter and to stay is decided by the relevant official authority, and its published guidance is the only account of your position that counts. Nothing here restates it, summarises it or interprets it, and neither should any other third party you come across while researching.
The institution decides other things: whether it recognises the qualifications you hold, which fee category it puts you in, what it needs regarding the language your programme runs in, and what it asks you to complete before registration. The international student office is set up for precisely these questions. Contact it early enough that a slow answer does not turn into a problem, and ask what people in your situation tend to underestimate.
Then there are the arrangements that are yours to organise but not yours to guess at: health cover, banking and payments, travel and arrival timing, and anything to do with paid work, which is decided by official rules rather than by the university or by anyone writing about it. Treat each as a separate task with a separate owner, and confirm each with whoever owns it. Our general money section is background reading for the everyday side of that and is not specific to anywhere.
Admissions
How do you find what applies to you? Start from the official website shown with this profile, go to the specific programme, and read the entry page for the intake you would join. Criteria are written against programmes and against applicant backgrounds, which is why they cannot be generalised and why nothing of that kind appears here. Nothing on this page should be treated as a requirement, a date or a threshold, because none of it is.
Then establish the process: how an application is submitted, where it goes, what supporting material forms part of what is assessed, and how you will be told the outcome. Establish too whether applicants who studied elsewhere are routed differently, since that is a matter of process rather than of merit. If a published page does not answer your question, put it to the admissions office in writing and keep what comes back, because that is the only version anyone is accountable for.
Tuition and fees
This page states no fee. That is policy rather than oversight: fees belong to the institution, they are revised, and a figure republished by a third party is a figure nobody is keeping current. What this page does instead is point you at the official source and describe how to read it, independently of the institution and without speaking for it.
Watch the structure as much as the amount. What is published may attach to a programme rather than to the institution as a whole, so something presented as the institution's fee may not be your fee at all. And the rate that would actually apply may follow from the category the institution puts a student in, which is for them to settle rather than for you to work out. Our explainer on why an institution may publish more than one rate describes the general pattern without applying it to anybody. Read the official fee pages for the year you would enter, and ask the institution directly if pages appear to disagree.
Admissions

- Language requirements

- Required documents

- Intake and deadlines
- Not reviewed. U4S publishes no deadline without the intake it belongs to, and has not read this page’s dates.
Entry requirements change between intakes and differ by programme, by the qualification you hold and by where you are applying from. U4S records where the official requirements are published and when that page was last retrieved — nothing more. Students should verify current requirements on the official admissions page before relying on anything.
Next verification step
Open the official admissions page and record, only where it states them explicitly: the intake it applies to, the deadlines with their years, and the applicant categories it covers. U4S records no grade, test score or acceptance rate at any point.

What the institution asks for
Read from the institution’s own admissions pages, in the institution’s own words and units. U4S does not decide whether anyone meets any of it.
U4S never converts between grading systems or between language tests. A GPA is not a percentage, a UK classification is not a German Note, and an IELTS band is not a TOEFL score — institutions decide what they accept, and only the institution’s own published threshold governs an application. Everything below is recorded in the units the institution itself used.
Language requirement
A language test the institution names, with its own threshold. U4S does not convert between tests.
- Institution-wideStated, but more than one value applies
176 or above on C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency – minimum 169 in each component
U4S records no single value here: the page names more than one Cambridge qualification (C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency) without settling which applies.

- Institution-wideNamed without a value
To submit a Canadian Academic English Assessment (CAEL) score or a Duolingo score you must log in to your test account and select Carleton University as a recipient institution.

- Institution-wideStated, but more than one value applies
6.5 IELTS (minimum 6.0 in each band)
U4S records no single value here: the page states more than one IELTS threshold (6, 6.5), so which one governs this programme is for the institution to say.

Requirements marked as institution-wide were read from a page that covers more than this programme. They are what the institution publishes for applicants generally, and the programme’s own requirements may differ.
Everything above is a partial reading of one page. The official admissions page is the only complete statement of what this institution asks for: https://admissions.carleton.ca/
Housing
Source locatedThis is about housing the institution itself runs. It says nothing about private rentals near the campus, which are a different market with different contracts, different prices and different consequences if something goes wrong.
- Official accommodation page
- housing.carleton.ca/
- Housing application
- Not located. Apply through the accommodation page above.
- Does the institution manage housing itself?
- Not reviewed. Locating an accommodation page does not establish this — some such pages exist mainly to explain that the institution does not.
- Is housing guaranteed?
- Not reviewed. U4S states no guarantee unless the institution has stated one in writing, because a student would plan a move around it.
- Residence types
- Not reviewed.
- Application period
- Not reviewed. U4S publishes no housing deadline without the year it belongs to.
- Cost
- Not reviewed. U4S publishes no rent figure without a currency, a period, a cycle and what it covers.
- Deposit
- Not reviewed. A deposit is not rent, and U4S records one only where the institution states it separately.
- Private renting
- U4S has not recorded whether this page covers private renting. Private accommodation is not university-managed housing, and U4S lists no private landlords or agencies.
Where a line reads “not reviewed”, U4S has not retrieved an official page stating it. That is a gap in U4S — it is never a statement that an institution has no housing, offers no guarantee, or has nothing available.
Next verification step
Open the official accommodation page and record, only where it states them explicitly: whether the institution manages housing itself, whether it offers any guarantee and in what words, the residence types it names, the application period with its year, and any cost with its currency, period and what it covers.

Official student support
Offices U4S has located on this institution’s own site. That an institution has a service means its website says so. It does not mean the service has capacity, answers quickly, can help with a particular problem, or that anybody found it useful. U4S measures none of those and publishes no rating of any service.
- Carleton InternationalThe office that deals with applicants and students from abroad. · page retrieved and confirmed · contact form
U4S links to an institution’s own page or contact form and publishes no email address. A list of institutional addresses is a list for anybody who wants one, and a contact form routes a student’s question better than a shared inbox.
If somebody is in immediate danger, use the local emergency number rather than any service listed here. U4S has not verified a single institution’s emergency contact, and a partly-verified one is worse than none.
Programmes
Read from this institution’s own catalogue. Each title is reproduced exactly as the institution wrote it, and each programme page records the source it came from. This is not necessarily every programme the institution runs: it is what the catalogue U4S retrieved actually listed.
