Scholarships and funding schemes

Named schemes U4S has read from providers’ own scholarship index pages. U4S is not a scholarship provider and awards nothing.

U4S is not the provider

U4S does not award, administer or fund any scholarship. Every scheme listed here belongs to the provider named on its page, and only that provider can tell you whether it is open, what it is worth and who may apply.

Every scheme listed here was read from an index page published by the body that awards it. What that establishes is narrow and worth stating plainly: the scheme exists, it belongs to the named provider, and this is where its official page is.

What it does not establish is whether this year’s round is open, what the award is worth, or who may apply. Those live in prose on the provider’s own pages, and U4S will not have a script read them — a funding amount or a deadline that looks authoritative and belongs to a different cycle costs a reader an application, or money. So those fields are empty, and every record says so rather than implying the scheme has no deadline and no value.

A deadline will only ever appear on these pages with the cycle it belongs to. “31 January” with no year is the most common way a funding page misleads, because it looks current forever; the data model here cannot express one.

What has been reviewed

Open in a reviewed cycle
9
Announced for a future cycle
3
Closed
217
Exists — cycle not reviewed
151
Not reviewed
41

These counts are derived from the records when this page is built. “Exists — cycle not reviewed” is the honest ceiling for a record established from an index page alone; moving one past that takes a person reading the provider’s page and recording a cycle.

Not all of this is money you keep

A loan is repaid. An assistantship is earned. A fee waiver is worth only what it removes. Listing them beside a scholarship without saying which is which is the commonest way a funding page misleads.

Loan
MUST BE REPAID, usually with interest. Not an award.
Assistantship
Payment in exchange for teaching or research. It is a job with a study attached.
Fee waiver or discount
A reduction in what is charged. No money changes hands, and it is worth only what it removes.
Stipend
A regular payment toward living costs. May be taxed and may carry conditions.

U4S reads the kind from the award’s own title, because no record states one. Where a title carries two kinds it is left unresolved rather than guessed: a donor surnamed Grant and an award that really is a loan as well as a scholarship look identical to a classifier.

Before you apply for anything

  • A genuine award does not charge you for the chance to receive it.An "application fee", "processing fee" or "administration fee" for a scholarship is the oldest form of this.
  • Apply on the provider’s own site, not through a directory.A directory that stands between you and the provider is being paid for something, and it is not for your application.
  • Nobody can guarantee you funding, and nobody legitimate will say they can.Almost all of these are competitive, and the people deciding have not met you.
  • Be careful what a "matching" service asks for.Your nationality, income and contact details are worth money to somebody. An award’s own terms are published and need none of that to read.
  • Check the deadline on the provider’s page, every time.Funding pages are copied and left up. A date that has been carried over from last cycle looks exactly like this cycle’s.

U4S gives no money, administers no scheme, takes no application and is paid by nobody for listing an award. Every decision belongs to the provider.
