Subject areas

U4S’s own grouping of academic fields, so that a degree called one thing in one country can be found alongside its equivalents elsewhere.

Subject areas are the one part of the programme data that U4S decides rather than retrieves. A degree titled “Informatik”, one titled “Computing Science” and one titled “Computer Engineering” are named by three different institutions in three different systems, and a student comparing them needs somewhere they sit together. That grouping is an editorial judgement about the published title, and it is labelled as one wherever it appears.

What a subject area is not: a claim about how any institution organises its faculties, a statement that programmes within it are equivalent, or any kind of ordering. The descriptions below say what a field studies. They say nothing about what a degree in it is worth, how hard it is to get into, or what anyone earns afterwards, because U4S has no verified data on any of that.

A subject only gets its own page once there are programmes behind it. The fields listed as not yet covered are real academic areas that U4S has not retrieved programmes for — naming them is more honest than quietly leaving them out.

Subject areas with programmes

  • Computer Science

    253 programmes

Programmes are grouped here when the institution’s own title names computer science, computing or informatics. Software engineering, data science and artificial intelligence are listed separately because many institutions run them as distinct degrees.

  • Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

    185 programmes

Grouped here when the official title names data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning or analytics. Where a programme is titled as computer science with an AI track, U4S records the title the institution published rather than the track.

  • Software Engineering

    38 programmes

Grouped here when the official title names software engineering, software development or software systems. The line between this and computer science is drawn by the institution, not by U4S.

  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering

    125 programmes

Grouped here when the official title names electrical, electronic, power or telecommunications engineering. Embedded and computer engineering titles that name electronics explicitly also sit here.

  • Mechanical Engineering
