University pages: orientation now, researched profiles later

Profiles here are descriptive rather than evaluative. They answer questions about shape and texture: how an academic year is organised, how teaching time is distributed across a week, whether accommodation is offered to new arrivals or left to the open market, how far students typically live from where they study, and how much of campus life is arranged by the institution rather than assembled by students. Each of those has documents behind it, which means each of them can be checked by someone who doubts the answer.

The second half of a profile deals with living rather than studying. Cost structure matters more than a single headline figure, because the shape of what a student pays for, and when, is what determines whether a year is survivable. So does the ordinary week: what the surrounding area offers on a wet Tuesday in the middle of term, not what it looks like on an open day. Those textures are handled poorly by official material because they cannot be photographed, and they are covered in general terms across the student life pillar while this section fills up.

A profile also has to be explicit about its own limits. An institution is not a single experience: a student on a heavily timetabled programme and a student on a research-led one can describe the same place in incompatible ways, and both descriptions can be accurate. Every profile will therefore state which parts of it apply across the institution and which parts apply only to a particular kind of programme, a particular year group, or a particular residence.

There is a version of this section that exists on a great many sites: profiles marked as preliminary, populated with figures that appeared somewhere once, tidied into a house style and quietly never revisited. It performs well in search. It also teaches readers nothing they can rely on, because a provisional label at the head of a page does not travel with a sentence once someone has read it and remembered it as a fact.

The decision here is to publish nothing past orientation until the first profile clears the standard set out below. That is slower, and it means thinner pages. The alternative is worse: a body of material whose accuracy nobody, including its publisher, could vouch for line by line. U4S is an independent publisher operated by HELPERG LLC, not an admissions office and not an accredited institution, and the only thing that makes an independent description worth reading is that it can be checked.

Every factual sentence in a profile has to be traceable to something a reader could open. Preference runs to primary material: an institution's own published regulations, its accommodation terms, official statutory returns, and documents published by the body that oversees higher education in the relevant system. Secondary reporting can supply context, and is labelled as such when it does. The wider method is set out on the sources and methodology page.

Dating matters as much as sourcing. A fee structure, an accommodation guarantee or an application deadline is true of a particular intake rather than of an institution in general, so every claim of that kind carries the year it belongs to. A profile without dates ages quietly into inaccuracy while looking exactly the same on the page. Review dates therefore sit on the profile itself rather than in an internal spreadsheet nobody outside can see.

No score. There is no grade, no star, no tier and no composite figure summarising an institution into something sortable. A profile ends without a verdict, without a recommendation about who should apply, and without a sentence describing one institution as stronger than another. This is not a stylistic preference; a score is an argument compressed into a symbol, and the argument is exactly the part a reader needs to see.

Profiles also carry no admissions guidance, no assessment of a reader's chances, no interpretation of visa or immigration procedure, and no statement about what a qualification is worth in a labour market. U4S is not an admissions office, a government body or an adviser, a boundary set out in full on the not a university page. Where a question needs a licensed or official answer, a profile will say which kind of office answers it and go no further.

A ranking answers a question almost nobody actually has. It requires deciding, on the reader's behalf, how much weight to give research output against contact hours, employment outcomes against cost, or reputation against the practical business of finding somewhere to live. Those weights are invisible in the result. A reader sees a position and infers a fact, when what they are looking at is a set of editorial choices expressed as arithmetic.

The alternative on offer is less satisfying and more useful: description detailed enough that a reader can apply their own weights. Someone who needs guaranteed first-year housing, someone who needs to work part-time through term, and someone who needs a specific kind of teaching are asking three different questions, and no single ordering of institutions can answer all three. Setting out what an option costs, what it gives and who it tends to suit leaves the judgement where it belongs.

There is a commercial consequence to this, and it is worth naming. Ranked lists tend to attract attention in a way that descriptive profiles do not. U4S accepts that trade-off, because the moment a ranking exists the incentive to defend the ordering starts shaping the research behind it, and the description quietly becomes a justification.

Once profiles exist, some of them will be wrong. Institutions change accommodation policy, restructure programmes and revise regulations, and a sourced sentence can be accurate on the day it is written and misleading a year later. The interesting question is not whether errors occur but what happens to them afterwards, and how visible the repair is to the people who read the earlier version.

Corrections will be handled in the open. A substantive change to a factual claim is logged on the profile with the date and a short note on what changed, rather than edited silently so the page appears to have always said the new thing. Requests can come from anyone, including the institution described, and are assessed against the same sourcing standard as the original claim: a document that contradicts the profile settles it, and an objection to tone does not. The wider position is set out in the editorial policy.

An institution that disagrees with a description is in the same position as any other reader. It can point to a published document, and the profile changes. It cannot obtain the removal of an accurate, sourced statement because the statement is unwelcome, and any approach of that kind will be noted on the page rather than acted on quietly behind the scenes.

The material that already exists on U4S deals with the parts of the decision that do not depend on which institution a reader chooses. How a first year actually unfolds, how shared living works, what changes when someone moves country, and how money behaves when it arrives in irregular lumps are all questions with general answers, and general answers are the ones that hold up across systems.

Reading institutional material directly is worth the time too, with a working sense of what each document is for. A prospectus is an accurate description of what an institution wants to be understood as offering. Regulations, accommodation terms and complaints procedures are duller and considerably more informative, because they are the documents an institution has to stand behind when something goes wrong.
