ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon

An orientation page rather than a prospectus. It covers what a prospective student or a parent would need to establish and which office holds each answer; U4S has verified the official website and writes independently of the institution.

Next verification step

Tuition was not published for this institution. Open the institution’s own fee pages and check whether an annual amount is stated, which student category it applies to, and whether enrolment or insurance charges are listed separately. Publish nothing unless the page itself states the amount, the currency, the academic year, the study level, the student category and the period it covers.

Student life context

Almost everything people mean by student life is decided at a level below the institution: by the programme you join, the timetable it produces, the size of the group you are taught alongside, and the distance between where you live and where you are expected to be in the morning. An institution can be described in general terms and still tell you nothing useful about how your own week would run. So the question worth asking is not what student life is like here, but what it is like on the specific programme you are considering, and the people to ask are the ones who run it.

The student services office is the general point of contact, and there are things it is well placed to answer: how student organisations and sport are structured, whether they operate centrally or within individual faculties, how someone joins after teaching has already started, and what is available to a student who is struggling early on. That last question is worth asking even if you cannot imagine needing it, because the answer tells you how the place works. The patterns that recur in student life will help you decide which of these matter to you. Looking after yourself while studying covers the part most people postpone.

Housing considerations

Housing deserves attention before an offer is even settled, because the better options are taken by the people who asked earliest and what remains tends to be further away and harder to assess from a photograph. The first thing to establish is structural: does the university operate residences of its own, does it mainly point students towards the private market, or does it do both in some proportion. The accommodation office will say plainly which of those describes it, and every later question depends on that answer.

If the university holds places, ask how they are allocated and in what order, whether an offer must be accepted first, whether anyone is prioritised and on what basis, what a room includes, and whether the start of a contract lines up with the start of teaching, since those are not always the same day. If the private market is the route, ask who an agreement would be with, what is required at signing, how a deposit is held and returned, what is charged in addition to rent, and whether any of it can be done before arriving.

Both routes involve living alongside other people, which is a skill in itself and a common source of avoidable friction. Sharing costs with the people you live with covers the arrangements that stop small irritations becoming large ones. Whatever route you take, put the questions to the accommodation office in writing and keep the answers, because housing is the area where a misunderstanding is hardest to undo once you have already arrived.

International student considerations

For an applicant arriving from elsewhere, the work divides into categories, and it is worth naming them rather than working through an undifferentiated list. How qualifications gained in another system are assessed here. The language of instruction on the specific programme, and what evidence of it the institution asks for. Permission to enter and to remain in the country, which is a matter for the relevant official authority alone. Health cover, and how it is arranged. And the administration that only begins once you land: registration, an address, and a means of being paid and paying.

The important thing about that list is that no single body owns all of it. The international student office answers for the university on qualifications, language and enrolment. The official authority responsible for entry and residence answers for that, and nothing a university or a website says overrides it. Health cover may sit with either. Send your own circumstances to the international student office as one written question and keep the reply, then take the entry and residence question to the authority itself. Moving abroad to study covers the parts of this that people routinely underestimate.

Admissions

This page carries no requirements, deadlines or criteria, and that is on purpose. Those things vary by programme, by level of study, and by the category the institution places an applicant in, and they are revised by the institution on its own schedule. A summary of them, however carefully written, is a photograph of something that moves, and the reader has no way of knowing how long ago the photograph was taken.

The method that works is narrow rather than broad. Establish which route applies to you before reading anything about criteria at all, then find the official page that describes only that route. If you cannot work out which route is yours, ask the admissions office that question directly. It is a normal question, and they would far rather answer it than deal with an application filed under the wrong heading.

Then ask them what follows submission: how and when you would hear, what their particular wording for a conditional outcome actually means, what they would need from you next, and who to contact if there is something in your file that a standard process is not designed for. Applicants routinely over-prepare for the submission itself and under-prepare for everything after it. Adjusting to how a different system teaches and assesses is worth reading at around the same time.

Tuition and fees

No fee figure is published on this page. The reason is that a figure without its scope is not information. To be usable, an amount has to arrive attached to the period it applies to, the level and the programme it covers, and the applicant category it was set for. Detached from those, it reads as a fact and functions as a rumour, and the reader most likely to be misled is the one who could least afford to be.

There is also a structural point to check rather than assume. What is presented as the annual amount may sit alongside separate enrolment or insurance charges that are not tuition, listed in a different place or not on the fee page at all. Whether that is how things are arranged here is not something this page can tell you, and it is certainly not something to infer from any other institution. It is a direct question for the office that publishes the fees.

So treat the university's own fee pages as the source, read them for your own programme, level and applicant category and for the period you would actually be enrolled, and confirm anything ambiguous with the office in writing before committing to anything. Reading an official fee page carefully sets out what to look for and what to do when a field you need is simply absent.

Admissions

U4S has not located an official admissions source here. That is a gap in U4S, not a statement that there are no requirements — every institution has them, and they are on its own site.

Housing

Source located

This is about housing the institution itself runs. It says nothing about private rentals near the campus, which are a different market with different contracts, different prices and different consequences if something goes wrong.

Housing application
Not located. Apply through the accommodation page above.
Does the institution manage housing itself?
Not reviewed. Locating an accommodation page does not establish this — some such pages exist mainly to explain that the institution does not.
Is housing guaranteed?
Not reviewed. U4S states no guarantee unless the institution has stated one in writing, because a student would plan a move around it.
Residence types
Not reviewed.
Application period
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no housing deadline without the year it belongs to.
Cost
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no rent figure without a currency, a period, a cycle and what it covers.
Deposit
Not reviewed. A deposit is not rent, and U4S records one only where the institution states it separately.
Private renting
U4S has not recorded whether this page covers private renting. Private accommodation is not university-managed housing, and U4S lists no private landlords or agencies.

Where a line reads “not reviewed”, U4S has not retrieved an official page stating it. That is a gap in U4S — it is never a statement that an institution has no housing, offers no guarantee, or has nothing available.

Next verification step

Open the official accommodation page and record, only where it states them explicitly: whether the institution manages housing itself, whether it offers any guarantee and in what words, the residence types it names, the application period with its year, and any cost with its currency, period and what it covers.

Official student support

Offices U4S has located on this institution’s own site. That an institution has a service means its website says so. It does not mean the service has capacity, answers quickly, can help with a particular problem, or that anybody found it useful. U4S measures none of those and publishes no rating of any service.

U4S links to an institution’s own page or contact form and publishes no email address. A list of institutional addresses is a list for anybody who wants one, and a contact form routes a student’s question better than a shared inbox.

If somebody is in immediate danger, use the local emergency number rather than any service listed here. U4S has not verified a single institution’s emergency contact, and a partly-verified one is worse than none.

Programmes

U4S has not read a programme catalogue for this institution. That is a gap in U4S, not a statement about what the institution offers — check its own website for the programmes it runs.
