Shanghai Jiao Tong University

A page for working out what to ask, not a description of the university. It lists what a prospective student or a parent would need to settle before applying, and names the office that holds each answer.

Next verification step

Tuition was not published for this institution. Open the institution’s own fee pages and check which student category the amount applies to, whether it covers a year or a semester, and whether accommodation and insurance charges are listed apart from tuition. Publish nothing unless the page itself states the amount, the currency, the academic year or intake, the study level, the student category and the period it covers, and unless each amount can be tied to the row it belongs to.

Student life context

Nearly everything that decides how a week feels is administrative rather than atmospheric: the distance between where you sleep and where you are taught, the number of contact hours and the amount of independent work behind them, the way your subject is assessed and where that lands in the calendar, and whether the timetable leaves room for a job, a sport or a long journey home. These arrangements differ from one programme to another inside a single institution, so a general answer about the university will not tell you much about your own year. Ask about the programme you would actually join.

For the rest, the student services office owns the question. It can say what clubs, sport, faith groups, volunteering and student media exist, whether they are organised centrally or within faculties, what joining asks of a newcomer in time, and which of them the university runs itself as opposed to what simply exists around it and is open to students anyway. That last distinction sounds pedantic and turns out to matter. Our section on building a circle from scratch describes how students usually go about it somewhere they know nobody.

Housing considerations

Two questions come before all the others. Does the institution operate accommodation of its own, and if so who is eligible and how are places allocated. And if it does not, or if no place is offered to you, what does the accommodation office suggest instead. Put both to that office in writing early, along with a third: whether a confirmed place on a programme is a precondition for requesting a room, and when the outcome is normally known.

Anything arranged privately turns on the contract rather than the building. Establish who the agreement is with, what is required at signing, what has to be paid up front, how a deposit is held and what returns it, which bills sit outside the rent, and whether the whole arrangement can be completed before arriving. The student housing section covers those mechanics without assuming any particular market, and the accommodation office can say which of them are relevant here.

Timing is the part that most often goes wrong. Rooms near a university tend to be allocated in the order people asked, so the practical move is to find out when the accommodation office opens its own process and to plan backwards from that date rather than from the day teaching starts. A late search usually ends in whatever is left over, which is generally further from where you would be taught and harder to assess from photographs.

International student considerations

Treat an application from abroad as a set of categories rather than a list of tasks, because the categories have different owners. How your existing qualifications are looked at here. Which language your programme is taught and assessed in, and what evidence of language the institution asks for. Permission to enter and remain, which no university decides. Health cover. And the ordinary administration that follows arrival, such as registration, a bank account and proof of address.

Only the first two, and the enrolment that follows them, belong to the institution, and the international office speaks for it. Everything to do with entry and residence belongs to the relevant official authority, and only its own guidance counts; a summary elsewhere, including this one, cannot substitute for it. Where health cover sits varies from one institution to another, so ask both rather than deciding in advance which of them owns it.

The most useful preparation is to write your own circumstances down in full before asking anything: where you studied, in which language, at what level, and on what basis you would be travelling. A specific question gets a specific answer, while a vague one gets a link to a page you have already read. The study-abroad section sets out what tends to surprise people once they have arrived rather than before.

Admissions

This page carries no requirements, no dates and no measures of any kind, and that is deliberate rather than an omission. What applies to an applicant depends on the programme, on the level of study, and on the category the institution places them in, and one university can operate several unrelated admission routes at the same time. A general summary would therefore describe nobody accurately. The useful first step is to establish which route is yours, and then to read that route and ignore the rest.

Having found it, use the institution's own admissions pages and the office that maintains them, and treat everything else as a copy of unknown age. Ask in writing wherever the wording is ambiguous, keep the reply, ask how and when an outcome is communicated and what would be needed from you afterwards, and read the live official page once more before acting on anything, because the institution revises it on its own schedule and without telling anyone who has summarised it.

Tuition and fees

There is no fee figure here. U4S records a tuition amount only when it has been taken from the institution's own published source with the programme, the level of study, the applicant category and the academic year all attached to it. Those fields are what make an amount mean anything; without them a number looks like an answer and behaves like a guess. Since that work has not been done for this profile, the space is left empty rather than filled.

When you do read the official page, two things may be true of it and both are worth checking rather than assuming. Which student category an amount applies to is the first thing to establish, since a single page can set out several. And charges for accommodation or insurance are commonly printed alongside tuition without being tuition, which means an amount shown there may cover more, or less, than teaching does. The questions worth asking before paying anything sets out how to put that to the office directly.

So the amount worth planning around is the one you obtain yourself from the institution's fee pages, read for your own programme and applicant category and for the academic year you would begin in, then confirmed with the office that publishes it. How tuition fees work in general explains why one institution can publish many different amounts at once without any of them being wrong.

Language requirements
Not located. U4S records no language-test threshold for any programme, anywhere.
Required documents

Intake and deadlines
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no deadline without the intake it belongs to, and has not read this page’s dates.

Entry requirements change between intakes and differ by programme, by the qualification you hold and by where you are applying from. U4S records where the official requirements are published and when that page was last retrieved — nothing more. Students should verify current requirements on the official admissions page before relying on anything.

Next verification step

Open the official admissions page and record, only where it states them explicitly: the intake it applies to, the deadlines with their years, and the applicant categories it covers. U4S records no grade, test score or acceptance rate at any point.

What the institution asks for

Read from the institution’s own admissions pages, in the institution’s own words and units. U4S does not decide whether anyone meets any of it.

U4S never converts between grading systems or between language tests. A GPA is not a percentage, a UK classification is not a German Note, and an IELTS band is not a TOEFL score — institutions decide what they accept, and only the institution’s own published threshold governs an application. Everything below is recorded in the units the institution itself used.

Prior qualification

A qualification the institution says applicants must already hold.

Requirements marked as institution-wide were read from a page that covers more than this programme. They are what the institution publishes for applicants generally, and the programme’s own requirements may differ.

Everything above is a partial reading of one page. The official admissions page is the only complete statement of what this institution asks for: https://en.sjtu.edu.cn/study-sjtu/prospective/application

Housing

Source located

This is about housing the institution itself runs. It says nothing about private rentals near the campus, which are a different market with different contracts, different prices and different consequences if something goes wrong.

Housing application
Not located. Apply through the accommodation page above.
Does the institution manage housing itself?
Not reviewed. Locating an accommodation page does not establish this — some such pages exist mainly to explain that the institution does not.
Is housing guaranteed?
Not reviewed. U4S states no guarantee unless the institution has stated one in writing, because a student would plan a move around it.
Residence types
Single room, Dormitory
Application period
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no housing deadline without the year it belongs to.
Cost
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no rent figure without a currency, a period, a cycle and what it covers.
Deposit
Not reviewed. A deposit is not rent, and U4S records one only where the institution states it separately.
Private renting
U4S has not recorded whether this page covers private renting. Private accommodation is not university-managed housing, and U4S lists no private landlords or agencies.

Where a line reads “not reviewed”, U4S has not retrieved an official page stating it. That is a gap in U4S — it is never a statement that an institution has no housing, offers no guarantee, or has nothing available.

Next verification step

Confirm on the official accommodation page that what is recorded here still reads the same way, and record the application period with its year when the institution publishes it.

Official student support

Offices U4S has located on this institution’s own site. That an institution has a service means its website says so. It does not mean the service has capacity, answers quickly, can help with a particular problem, or that anybody found it useful. U4S measures none of those and publishes no rating of any service.

  • Study@SJTUThe office that deals with applicants and students from abroad. · page retrieved and confirmed · contact form

U4S links to an institution’s own page or contact form and publishes no email address. A list of institutional addresses is a list for anybody who wants one, and a contact form routes a student’s question better than a shared inbox.

If somebody is in immediate danger, use the local emergency number rather than any service listed here. U4S has not verified a single institution’s emergency contact, and a partly-verified one is worse than none.

Programmes

U4S has not read a programme catalogue for this institution. That is a gap in U4S, not a statement about what the institution offers — check its own website for the programmes it runs.
