Tohoku University
A page for orientation rather than persuasion. It names what a prospective student would need to find out about studying here, and points each question at the office that can answer it.

What U4S has verified
OrientationThe official website was retrieved and the page confirmed the institution. Everything else on this page is orientation unless marked otherwise below.
- Tuition and fees
- No figure is published on this page.
- Admissions
- U4S publishes no entry requirement, deadline or grade for any institution.
- Scholarships and support
- U4S names no funding scheme and states no eligibility.
Next verification step
Tuition was not published for this institution. Open the institution’s own fee pages and check whether an admission charge is listed separately from tuition, whether the amount covers a year or a semester, and which student categories it applies to. Publish nothing unless the page itself states the amount, the currency, the academic year or intake, the study level, the student category and the period it covers, and unless each amount can be tied to the row it belongs to.
Student life context
Students at the same institution can describe unrecognisably different weeks, because most of what makes up student life is settled at the level of the programme and the timetable rather than the university. How teaching is distributed across the week, whether contact hours cluster or scatter, how much of the work is done in groups, how long the daily journey is: those decide the texture of it. Ask about your own programme, and treat any general account of the institution as background.
The concrete questions have owners. The student services office can say how societies, sport and volunteering are organised here, whether they run centrally or within faculties, and what somebody new does in order to join. It can also say what exists for students who arrive knowing nobody, which is more useful to know in advance than any impression of the place. Working inside a way of teaching you are not used to is a separate matter, and what changes when the academic culture changes sets out its general shape.
Housing considerations
Different questions sit underneath the word accommodation, and it is worth keeping them apart. The first is what the institution itself operates or administers, and on what terms places in it are given out. The second is what the private rental market around a university looks like, and how somebody without local contacts enters it. The accommodation office can answer the first precisely, and will usually say something useful about the second.
Inside the first question: the order in which places are allocated, whether a confirmed offer of study comes before a room request, how long a place is held once offered, what a room includes, and what is payable in addition to the rent. Inside the second: who an agreement would be with, what has to be produced to sign one, how a deposit is held and returned, and whether anything can be set up before arrival. The housing section covers the general shape of both.
Timing is the part applicants underestimate. Places are allocated in sequence, and the sequence opens earlier than most people expect, so ask the accommodation office for its own dates and work from those. A plan built around the date you would like to arrive tends to meet a market that has already moved.
International student considerations
Arriving from another country adds categories rather than difficulty, and naming them early makes the work manageable. How the qualifications you hold are assessed here. Which language a programme is taught in, and which language the administration around it uses, since those are separate questions. Permission to enter and remain, which is a matter for the relevant official authority. Health cover. And the practical registration that follows an arrival anywhere.
The division of labour is clear once you see it. The international office answers for the institution: qualifications, evidence of language, enrolment, and what it expects to see. The official authority responsible for entry and residence answers for that, and only its answer has standing. Where health cover sits varies, so put the question to both. A page like this one can name the categories; it cannot answer inside them.
Sequence is what turns a long list into a plan. Establish the institution's answers first, because several other steps depend on having a place confirmed, and keep every reply in writing so that you can point at it later. Preparing for a move abroad sets out the general order in which these things tend to be done.
Admissions
Rather than hunting for requirements, begin by working out which route through the institution is yours: which programme, which level of study, and which applicant category it places you in. Those answers together decide which of the published processes applies to you, and reading the wrong one is the most common way to prepare thoroughly for the wrong thing.
After that, rely only on what the university publishes on its own admissions pages, in the version live at the moment you act, and on the admissions office standing behind them. Ask in writing and keep what you are told. Ask as well what happens after a submission: how an outcome is communicated, what a conditional outcome means in their wording, and who looks at a file that does not fit the usual pattern.
Tuition and fees
There is no amount on this page. Fees belong to the institution that sets them, they are attached to a particular intake and to a particular category of student, and a figure lifted onto somebody else's page carries none of that with it while still reading like a fact. What this section can offer is a way of reading rather than a number.
The method starts with the labels. A line described as an admission or entrance charge may sit beside tuition without being tuition, and whether one of them applies to your case, or both, or neither, is for the institution to state and not for a reader to infer. An amount may cover a year, or it may cover a shorter period, so establish the span before treating it as a total. Study costs and living costs are two budgets rather than one, and keeping fees and living costs apart makes any plan more honest.
Finish where the amounts are actually published: the fee pages covering the year of entry you have in mind, read for your programme and level of study, and the office named on them. Note when the page says it was last updated, and put anything ambiguous in writing. How to check an official fee page lists the fields a figure needs before it means anything.
Admissions
The institution’s own general admissions page. A particular programme may set requirements of its own, which this does not cover.
- Official admissions page
- www.tohoku.ac.jp/en/admissions/admission_graduate.html
- Application portal
- Not located. Apply through the admissions page above.
- Language requirements
- Not located. U4S records no language-test threshold for any programme, anywhere.
- Required documents
- Not located.
- Intake and deadlines
- Not reviewed. U4S publishes no deadline without the intake it belongs to, and has not read this page’s dates.
Entry requirements change between intakes and differ by programme, by the qualification you hold and by where you are applying from. U4S records where the official requirements are published and when that page was last retrieved — nothing more. Students should verify current requirements on the official admissions page before relying on anything.
Next verification step
Open the official admissions page and record, only where it states them explicitly: the intake it applies to, the deadlines with their years, and the applicant categories it covers. U4S records no grade, test score or acceptance rate at any point.

What the institution asks for
Read from the institution’s own admissions pages, in the institution’s own words and units. U4S does not decide whether anyone meets any of it.
U4S never converts between grading systems or between language tests. A GPA is not a percentage, a UK classification is not a German Note, and an IELTS band is not a TOEFL score — institutions decide what they accept, and only the institution’s own published threshold governs an application. Everything below is recorded in the units the institution itself used.
Application fee
A fee charged to apply. Separate from tuition, and never counted as tuition.

Requirements marked as institution-wide were read from a page that covers more than this programme. They are what the institution publishes for applicants generally, and the programme’s own requirements may differ.
Everything above is a partial reading of one page. The official admissions page is the only complete statement of what this institution asks for: https://www.tohoku.ac.jp/en/admissions/admission_graduate.html
Housing
U4S has not located an official accommodation page for Tohoku University. That is a gap in U4S — it is not a statement that the institution has no housing, and it should not be read as one.
This is about housing the institution itself runs. It says nothing about private rentals near the campus, which are a different market with different contracts, different prices and different consequences if something goes wrong.
Official student support
Offices U4S has located on this institution’s own site. That an institution has a service means its website says so. It does not mean the service has capacity, answers quickly, can help with a particular problem, or that anybody found it useful. U4S measures none of those and publishes no rating of any service.
- International AffairsThe office that deals with applicants and students from abroad. · page retrieved and confirmed · contact form
U4S links to an institution’s own page or contact form and publishes no email address. A list of institutional addresses is a list for anybody who wants one, and a contact form routes a student’s question better than a shared inbox.
If somebody is in immediate danger, use the local emergency number rather than any service listed here. U4S has not verified a single institution’s emergency contact, and a partly-verified one is worse than none.
Programmes
U4S has not read a programme catalogue for this institution. That is a gap in U4S, not a statement about what the institution offers — check its own website for the programmes it runs.
