The University of Edinburgh

What this page is for: helping a student or a parent work out which questions still need answering, and who holds each answer. It is not an account of the institution and makes no claim about it.

Next verification step

The 2026-27 registry index links to fee tables but no amount appears in the retrieved page, and the linked full-time schedule states categories and conditions without figures. The tables are likely rendered client-side; open them in a browser and read the amounts directly.

Student life context

Student life is largely an artefact of structure. How much teaching there is, how it is spread across the week, how far apart the places you need to be are, and whether you keep meeting the same people all shape the social side more than any description of atmosphere could. Because those things follow the programme rather than the institution, students in the same place can have quite different years, and a page like this cannot tell you which of them you would have.

The questions worth asking are therefore specific to the institution and to the programme at once. What does the students' representative body run, and how does somebody join. Which organisations recruit newcomers, and when. Where do academic, wellbeing and disability support sit, and are they reached centrally or through a department. Student services can answer those. What no office can arrange is the ordinary business of becoming a regular somewhere, which the student life section takes at more length.

Housing considerations

Establish the institutional side before the market side. Whether the university runs accommodation of its own, who may apply for it, how places are allocated, whether that application is separate from the application to study, and what happens if no place is offered: those answers come from the accommodation office, and they reframe every decision that follows.

What shared accommodation is like day to day is a separate matter from how it is obtained, and it is the part people tend to underestimate, since space, noise, cleaning, guests and money all have to be negotiated with people nobody chose. Living in shared student accommodation covers that ground. Whether any of it applies here depends on what the institution offers, which is again a question for its own housing service.

Arranging early is worth insisting on because housing is the hardest decision to reverse once teaching has started. A commitment made in a hurry, from a distance, in a market you cannot read, is a commitment that may have to be lived with for the length of a contract. Time is the resource that makes every other precaution possible.

International student considerations

An international applicant has to establish, as categories rather than as a checklist: what the official immigration authority of the destination country asks of somebody in their situation; how the institution treats the qualification they already hold; what language their programme is taught in and what evidence of language it looks for; what health cover applies to them; and what has to be registered or presented once they have arrived.

Every specific inside that list belongs to the international office or to the relevant official authority, and to neither this page nor any commercial intermediary. The office is also the sensible place to ask what usually goes wrong and in what order things are normally done, since it works through the same sequence repeatedly. The part of arriving that is not administrative at all, and is slower and less predictable than the paperwork, is covered in adjusting to an unfamiliar place.

Admissions

Admissions information only becomes usable once it has been narrowed. Work out the level, the programme, and the category the institution places you in; read the institution's own admissions pages for that combination; then take whatever is still unresolved to its admissions office. Reading widely before narrowing is how applicants end up carefully applying rules that were never theirs.

Nothing on this site states a requirement, a date or a criterion for any institution, and that is a standing rule rather than a temporary state of affairs. Details of that kind change without announcement, and a copy that has aged gets read as though it were current. The reasoning, and the rest of what U4S will and will not publish, is set out on the editorial policy page.

Tuition and fees

U4S looked at this institution's official fee page for the year ahead and found that it sets out fee categories and the conditions attached to them, but publishes no amounts on that page. That is what is reported here, because that is what was there. No figure is shown beneath this text, and none has been inferred from anything else.

Amounts do circulate on sites that summarise fees for prospective students. None of them could be traced back to the institution's own page, and an untraceable figure is not evidence of anything, however often it is repeated. Rather than reproduce one, the sensible route is to follow the categories the institution does publish, work out which of them describes you, and put the amount question to its admissions or student finance office directly. Checking a fee page properly sets out how to go about that.

It is also worth keeping the fee question separate from the wider cost of studying for a year. They are settled by different people, they change on different schedules, and only the fee side is published by an institution at all. The money section covers the part that sits around a fee, which is usually the part that gets underestimated.

Language requirements

Intake and deadlines
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no deadline without the intake it belongs to, and has not read this page’s dates.

Entry requirements change between intakes and differ by programme, by the qualification you hold and by where you are applying from. U4S records where the official requirements are published and when that page was last retrieved — nothing more. Students should verify current requirements on the official admissions page before relying on anything.

Next verification step

Open the official admissions page and record, only where it states them explicitly: the intake it applies to, the deadlines with their years, and the applicant categories it covers. U4S records no grade, test score or acceptance rate at any point.

What the institution asks for

Read from the institution’s own admissions pages, in the institution’s own words and units. U4S does not decide whether anyone meets any of it.

U4S never converts between grading systems or between language tests. A GPA is not a percentage, a UK classification is not a German Note, and an IELTS band is not a TOEFL score — institutions decide what they accept, and only the institution’s own published threshold governs an application. Everything below is recorded in the units the institution itself used.

Requirements marked as institution-wide were read from a page that covers more than this programme. They are what the institution publishes for applicants generally, and the programme’s own requirements may differ.

Everything above is a partial reading of one page. The official admissions page is the only complete statement of what this institution asks for: https://study.ed.ac.uk/admissions

Housing

This is about housing the institution itself runs. It says nothing about private rentals near the campus, which are a different market with different contracts, different prices and different consequences if something goes wrong.

Housing application
Not located. Apply through the accommodation page above.
Does the institution manage housing itself?
Yes — the institution states it manages housing
Is housing guaranteed?
Not reviewed. U4S states no guarantee unless the institution has stated one in writing, because a student would plan a move around it.
Residence types
Catered, Postgraduate accommodation
Application period
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no housing deadline without the year it belongs to.
Cost
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no rent figure without a currency, a period, a cycle and what it covers.
Deposit
Not reviewed. A deposit is not rent, and U4S records one only where the institution states it separately.
Private renting
U4S has not recorded whether this page covers private renting. Private accommodation is not university-managed housing, and U4S lists no private landlords or agencies.

Where a line reads “not reviewed”, U4S has not retrieved an official page stating it. That is a gap in U4S — it is never a statement that an institution has no housing, offers no guarantee, or has nothing available.

Next verification step

Confirm on the official accommodation page that what is recorded here still reads the same way, and record the application period with its year when the institution publishes it.

Official student support

Offices U4S has located on this institution’s own site. That an institution has a service means its website says so. It does not mean the service has capacity, answers quickly, can help with a particular problem, or that anybody found it useful. U4S measures none of those and publishes no rating of any service.

  • GlobalThe office that deals with applicants and students from abroad. · page retrieved and confirmed · contact form

U4S links to an institution’s own page or contact form and publishes no email address. A list of institutional addresses is a list for anybody who wants one, and a contact form routes a student’s question better than a shared inbox.

If somebody is in immediate danger, use the local emergency number rather than any service listed here. U4S has not verified a single institution’s emergency contact, and a partly-verified one is worse than none.

Funding schemes

Named schemes U4S has read from this institution’s own scholarship pages. U4S does not award any of them and cannot tell you whether a round is open.

Programmes

Read from this institution’s own catalogue. Each title is reproduced exactly as the institution wrote it, and each programme page records the source it came from. This is not necessarily every programme the institution runs: it is what the catalogue U4S retrieved actually listed.
