University of Porto

This page is an orientation, not a recommendation. It describes what a prospective student or a parent should establish about this university, roughly in the order it becomes useful, and where each answer is held.

Next verification step

Tuition was not published for this institution. Open the institution’s own fee pages and check whether an annual amount is stated, which student category it applies to, and whether enrolment or insurance charges are listed separately. Publish nothing unless the page itself states the amount, the currency, the academic year, the study level, the student category and the period it covers.

Student life context

Most of what makes a week workable can be established before anything is committed to, and almost none of it is a matter of reputation. Where teaching happens relative to where you would live. How many hours are timetabled and how much of the work is unsupervised. How your subject is assessed and when that lands in the year. Whether there is enough slack in the week for a job, a sport or a long journey home. Ask about your own programme, because these differ inside a single institution.

The social architecture is the second question, and it has an institutional answer. Put it to the student services office: what societies, sport and student organisations exist, whether they are organised centrally or within individual faculties, how somebody new joins, what it asks of them in time, and whether anything happens before teaching starts. The office can also say what the university runs itself and what simply exists in the city and is open to students anyway.

The third question is the one people skip: what support exists when things go wrong, academically or otherwise, and which office administers it. Ask before you need it and note where the answer lives. Our wellbeing section describes the kinds of support students commonly look for and how to recognise when it is worth asking rather than waiting.

Housing considerations

Accommodation comes first in practice even when it feels like a later step, because it is the hardest thing to fix late. Establish what the institution operates or signposts, who is eligible, how places are allocated and in what order, whether a confirmed place on a programme is a precondition, when the result is known, and what the accommodation office suggests for students who are not offered a room of that kind.

Run the private option in parallel rather than as a fallback you turn to at the end. The things to settle are who the contract is with, what is required at signing, what is paid before keys change hands, how a deposit is held and returned, what is charged in addition to rent, and whether the arrangement can be completed from another country. Finding housing from abroad sets out how that process usually runs.

Then work backwards from the accommodation office's own opening date rather than from your arrival date, because student housing in a university city tends to work as a queue and the choice narrows as it moves. Leaving it late generally means taking whatever remains, which is harder to assess from a listing and often further from where you would be taught.

International student considerations

An application from another country involves several separate systems, and confusing them is what causes delay. The institution decides admission, enrolment and academic registration. The relevant official authority decides entry and residence and everything attached to them. Health cover, a bank account, proof of address and any registration expected after arrival sit between the two, and some of them depend on each other, so the order matters as much as the content does.

Put the institutional half to the international office and treat its answer as final on that half only. Where it tells you an official authority decides, treat that as the end of the line: guidance from whoever issues the permission is the only guidance that counts, and nothing published elsewhere, this page included, can stand in for it. Ask the international office where students in your situation most often get held up, which tends to be more useful than asking for a list.

Language belongs in the same exercise. Establish which language your programme is taught and assessed in, and which language the administration around it runs in, since one does not tell you the other. Preparing for a move abroad covers the sequencing of all of this, and the international office can say which parts of it apply here.

Admissions

You will not find requirements, dates or measures here. What applies depends on the programme, the level of study and the applicant category the institution places you in, and one university can run several unrelated processes at once. The task is therefore to identify your own route first and read only that, rather than to assemble a general picture that may end up describing nobody at all.

The institution's own admissions pages, and the office that maintains them, are the only source worth acting on; everything else is a copy of unknown age. Put ambiguous points in writing, keep the reply, ask what happens after an application is submitted and how you will be told, and check the live page again before acting. Adapting to a new academic culture is worth reading once a place is confirmed.

Tuition and fees

No fee figure is published on this page. U4S shows a tuition amount only where it has been read from the institution's own published source and recorded with the programme, the level of study, the applicant category and the academic year it belongs to. That work has not been done here, so the field stays empty rather than being filled with an estimate, and no impression of the scale is offered either, because that would be an unverified figure dressed as an opinion.

One thing is worth checking rather than assuming: an annual amount may sit alongside separate enrolment or insurance charges that are not tuition, published under their own headings, in which case the figure labelled tuition would not be the whole of what a student is billed. Whether that applies here is for the office that publishes the fees to say, so ask what a quoted amount includes and what appears apart from it.

The reliable figure is the one you read yourself on the institution's fee pages, for your programme and your applicant category and for the academic year you would actually begin. Fees and cost of living explains why an accurate fee is still only part of what a year of study asks of anyone financially, and why the two are worth planning separately.

Intake and deadlines
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no deadline without the intake it belongs to, and has not read this page’s dates.

Entry requirements change between intakes and differ by programme, by the qualification you hold and by where you are applying from. U4S records where the official requirements are published and when that page was last retrieved — nothing more. Students should verify current requirements on the official admissions page before relying on anything.

Next verification step

Open the official admissions page and record, only where it states them explicitly: the intake it applies to, the deadlines with their years, and the applicant categories it covers. U4S records no grade, test score or acceptance rate at any point.

What the institution asks for

Read from the institution’s own admissions pages, in the institution’s own words and units. U4S does not decide whether anyone meets any of it.

U4S never converts between grading systems or between language tests. A GPA is not a percentage, a UK classification is not a German Note, and an IELTS band is not a TOEFL score — institutions decide what they accept, and only the institution’s own published threshold governs an application. Everything below is recorded in the units the institution itself used.

Requirements marked as institution-wide were read from a page that covers more than this programme. They are what the institution publishes for applicants generally, and the programme’s own requirements may differ.

Everything above is a partial reading of one page. The official admissions page is the only complete statement of what this institution asks for: https://www.up.pt/portal/en/study/bachelors-and-integrated-masters-degrees/applications-and-admissions/

Housing

Source located

This is about housing the institution itself runs. It says nothing about private rentals near the campus, which are a different market with different contracts, different prices and different consequences if something goes wrong.

Housing application
Not located. Apply through the accommodation page above.
Does the institution manage housing itself?
Not reviewed. Locating an accommodation page does not establish this — some such pages exist mainly to explain that the institution does not.
Is housing guaranteed?
Not reviewed. U4S states no guarantee unless the institution has stated one in writing, because a student would plan a move around it.
Residence types
Not reviewed.
Application period
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no housing deadline without the year it belongs to.
Cost
Not reviewed. U4S publishes no rent figure without a currency, a period, a cycle and what it covers.
Deposit
Not reviewed. A deposit is not rent, and U4S records one only where the institution states it separately.
Private renting
U4S has not recorded whether this page covers private renting. Private accommodation is not university-managed housing, and U4S lists no private landlords or agencies.

Where a line reads “not reviewed”, U4S has not retrieved an official page stating it. That is a gap in U4S — it is never a statement that an institution has no housing, offers no guarantee, or has nothing available.

Next verification step

Open the official accommodation page and record, only where it states them explicitly: whether the institution manages housing itself, whether it offers any guarantee and in what words, the residence types it names, the application period with its year, and any cost with its currency, period and what it covers.

Official student support

Offices U4S has located on this institution’s own site. That an institution has a service means its website says so. It does not mean the service has capacity, answers quickly, can help with a particular problem, or that anybody found it useful. U4S measures none of those and publishes no rating of any service.

U4S links to an institution’s own page or contact form and publishes no email address. A list of institutional addresses is a list for anybody who wants one, and a contact form routes a student’s question better than a shared inbox.

If somebody is in immediate danger, use the local emergency number rather than any service listed here. U4S has not verified a single institution’s emergency contact, and a partly-verified one is worse than none.

Programmes

U4S has not read a programme catalogue for this institution. That is a gap in U4S, not a statement about what the institution offers — check its own website for the programmes it runs.
