The University of Tokyo
An orientation page for readers considering The University of Tokyo. It covers what an applicant needs to establish and where those answers come from, and it makes no claims about the institution itself.

Next verification step
Tuition was not published for this institution. Open the institution’s own fee pages and check whether an admission charge is listed separately from tuition, whether the amount covers a year or a semester, and which student categories it applies to. Publish nothing unless the page itself states the amount, the currency, the academic year or intake, the study level, the student category and the period it covers, and unless each amount can be tied to the row it belongs to.
Student life context
Student life is built out of the ordinary: the hours teaching occupies, the journey between where you live and where you study, where you can work quietly between commitments, and how a cohort becomes a set of people you actually know. None of that is uniform within an institution, let alone between institutions, so the question to carry into any conversation is what a normal week looks like for the specific programme you are considering.
Ask the student services office how teaching tends to be scheduled for that programme, what is open outside class hours, and what clubs, societies or student bodies exist and how a new student joins them. Ask what the institution expects you to arrange in the period before teaching starts, since that period often carries more administration than students anticipate. Our student life pages describe the parts of this that hold anywhere.
It is worth locating support services before the term in which you need them. Establish what exists, who it is for, and how a student makes contact. Our wellbeing pages set out the kinds of provision institutions commonly have in some form; what is actually available here is a question for the institution, and asking it early costs nothing.
Housing considerations
Establish whether the institution offers accommodation, on what basis places are offered, and whether the accommodation application is separate from the admission process. Establish also whether an offer of a place depends on anything else being settled, and what the fallback is if no place is available for your intake. The accommodation office holds those answers, and its position can differ from one intake to the next, so ask about the intake you are applying for.
If you will be renting privately, the questions change but do not get simpler. Establish the length of an agreement, what a deposit covers and the conditions for its return, what the rent includes, what is billed separately, whether any guarantor arrangement is involved, and what notice either side gives. Make sure you have understood everything you are asked to sign, and ask for time to read it rather than agreeing on the spot.
Arranging this early matters because availability shrinks as teaching approaches and because the useful checks take time to make. Give yourself room to ask questions, to compare what you are offered against what you were told, and to confirm anything important in writing. Our guide to finding housing from another country covers the sequence most students find manageable.
International student considerations
Coming from another country means running an administrative track alongside the academic one. It contains entry permission and whatever documentation the relevant official authority asks for; any registration or reporting expected after you arrive; health cover; banking and the movement of money; an address and a means of being contacted; and the question of whether paid work is possible at all. Each item belongs to somebody official, and none of it should be settled by assumption or by something read on a general site.
The international student office is the place to start for anything the institution itself handles, and it can normally tell you which official body governs the rest. Ask what it advises on and what it does not. Where it names an authority, treat that authority as the only source on its own requirements, and ask it directly rather than relying on a summary, however confident the summary sounds.
Establish the language of instruction for the specific programme you are applying to, and separately the language in which registration, correspondence and everyday administration are conducted, because a programme and its paperwork are not always in the same language. Establish too how a qualification awarded elsewhere is assessed and by whom. Our preparation guide sets out a workable order for all of this.
Admissions
This page states no requirement, no deadline and no description of how applications are judged, because those belong to the institution, are set per programme and per route, and are revised. Anything reproduced elsewhere is a copy of a moment. The reliable approach is to go to the official admissions pages, narrow to the exact programme and level, confirm you are reading the current cycle, and work outwards from there.
Where the pages leave a gap, write to the admissions office and ask, then keep the answer with the date on it. Ask which office decides what, and whether a qualification from another country is assessed within the application or separately from it. How we verify what appears here explains the limits of this page: we confirm the official website, and everything else is for the institution to tell you.
Tuition and fees
No amount is published on this page. Tuition is the institution's to set and to revise, it varies by programme and by level, and what applies depends on the category an institution places an applicant in, so a figure carried over onto a third-party page is a liability rather than a service to anyone reading it.
Something to watch for when you reach the official pages: an admission or entrance charge may be listed beside tuition, and if it is, it is not the same thing as tuition and should not be read as part of it. An amount shown may also cover a full year or a shorter period, so establish which period it refers to before you do any arithmetic with it. Establish as well what is billed separately from tuition and when each payment falls due.
Take the amounts from the institution's own fee pages for the relevant year of entry, and ask the office that publishes them to confirm that what you are reading applies to your intake and your programme. Our note on fees against living costs explains why a fee figure on its own tells you very little about what a year will actually require of you.
Admissions
U4S has not located an official admissions source here. That is a gap in U4S, not a statement that there are no requirements — every institution has them, and they are on its own site.
Housing
Source locatedThis is about housing the institution itself runs. It says nothing about private rentals near the campus, which are a different market with different contracts, different prices and different consequences if something goes wrong.
- Official accommodation page
- www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/prospective-students/housing.html
- Housing application
- Not located. Apply through the accommodation page above.
- Does the institution manage housing itself?
- Not reviewed. Locating an accommodation page does not establish this — some such pages exist mainly to explain that the institution does not.
- Is housing guaranteed?
- Not reviewed. U4S states no guarantee unless the institution has stated one in writing, because a student would plan a move around it.
- Residence types
- Dormitory
- Application period
- Not reviewed. U4S publishes no housing deadline without the year it belongs to.
- Cost
- Not reviewed. U4S publishes no rent figure without a currency, a period, a cycle and what it covers.
- Deposit
- Not reviewed. A deposit is not rent, and U4S records one only where the institution states it separately.
- Private renting
- U4S has not recorded whether this page covers private renting. Private accommodation is not university-managed housing, and U4S lists no private landlords or agencies.
Where a line reads “not reviewed”, U4S has not retrieved an official page stating it. That is a gap in U4S — it is never a statement that an institution has no housing, offers no guarantee, or has nothing available.
Next verification step
Confirm on the official accommodation page that what is recorded here still reads the same way, and record the application period with its year when the institution publishes it.

Official student support
Offices U4S has located on this institution’s own site. That an institution has a service means its website says so. It does not mean the service has capacity, answers quickly, can help with a particular problem, or that anybody found it useful. U4S measures none of those and publishes no rating of any service.
- Guide for International ApplicantsThe office that deals with applicants and students from abroad. · page retrieved and confirmed · contact form
U4S links to an institution’s own page or contact form and publishes no email address. A list of institutional addresses is a list for anybody who wants one, and a contact form routes a student’s question better than a shared inbox.
If somebody is in immediate danger, use the local emergency number rather than any service listed here. U4S has not verified a single institution’s emergency contact, and a partly-verified one is worse than none.
Programmes
U4S has not read a programme catalogue for this institution. That is a gap in U4S, not a statement about what the institution offers — check its own website for the programmes it runs.
